Bottom club Aston Villa, struggling champions Chelsea and high flying West Ham United all feature in the January shortlist for the African Player of the Month in the English Premier League.

Watford FC striker, Nigerian Odion Ighalo was today unanimously given the award of Premier League's African Player of the month of December.

New African Soccer has today announced Crystal Palace's DR Congo forward Yannick Bolassie as African Player of the month of November in the English Premier League.

For the first time in the short life span of the African Players awards in the English Premier League, the preceding month’s award winner has appeared on the shortlist for the current month. Odion Ighalo won the award by an overwhelming majority in October, and, according to a release by New African Soccer, he seemed to “continue where he left off in October, playing well enough to earn him a place in the shortlist for November”.

By Friday morning, it was clear that the next world champions in Under-17 category will be African. With Nigeria’s 4-2 victory over Mexico in an enthralling semi-final, and Mali’s 3-1 triumph over Belgium in the other tie, an all-African final was set up. With that, it made Africa the most successful confederation/continent in youth football history.

Nigeria was on familiar turf again on Sunday, as their Under-17 national team, known in many circles as the Golden Eaglets, won an unprecedented fifth U17 World Cup in Chile.

Nigeria's Odion Ighalo has added his voice of encouragement to the holders of the U17 World Cup, the Nigerian team, backing them to win in tonight's final.
